Women in leadership
There is clear evidence to demonstrate that better outcomes are achieved across the spectrum of priorities when women are represented in the top tier of organisations.
The Office for the Public Sector is responsible for South Australia’s Strategic Plan (SASP) Target 52: Have women comprising half of the public sector employees in the executive levels (including Chief Executives) by 2014 and maintain thereafter. We have collaborated with the Office for Women and the Equal Opportunity Commission to identify actions that will help the sector reach this target.
Women continue to be under-represented in executive roles, including Chief Executive roles, in the public sector.
As at June 2016, approximately 47% of all public sector executives were women despite women comprising 69% of the sector. Further, women only comprise 39.8% of the South Australian Executive Service.
Target 52 seeks to address this inequality, and create a more representative and diverse public sector workforce.
Gender Equality in Leadership Strategy
The Senior Management Council has released the Gender Equality in Leadership (GEiL) Strategy for the South Australian Public Sector. This complements the Achieving Women’s Equality: South Australia’s Women’s Policy released by the Office for Women. The strategy seeks to ensure women are equally represented, valued and rewarded.
The GEiL Steering Committee is in charge of overseeing the implementation of the Strategy.

EMPOWER - Sponsorship Program
Achieving gender parity amongst executives is a Senior Management Council (SMC) strategic priority for 2017, and is the key focus of SMC’s Gender Equality in Leadership Strategy.
One of the agreed activities to support gender balance in leadership was the development of a sponsorship program for female leaders.
EMPOWER – Women in Leadership Sponsorship Program was launched at the SMC sponsored event: The Second Innings – Gender Equality in Leadership Summit.
The EMPOWER program is a bold, exploratory, and results-driven program that pairs high performing women (protégés) with a sponsor from the executive group in order to advance the protégés career. The initial pilot will be for 15 women and is scheduled to commence in May 2016, for a 7 month period.
