Traineeship & Graduate Program - mentoring

Through the South Australian Government Traineeship and Graduate Program, new trainees and graduates are provided a network of supports to assist them to develop their skills and knowledge.

Mentors are an important part of this network, providing support and advice to trainees and graduates as new employees of the South Australian Government.

What is mentoring?

Workplace mentoring is a professional support and learning partnership between employees – usually someone more experienced and knowledgeable (mentor) and someone less experienced (mentee).

The mentor-mentee relationship exists outside of formal reporting and line management arrangements.  The professional relationship provides opportunities for professional and personal growth for both mentors and mentees. Mentors share their professional knowledge and experience with mentees to support mentees develop their own professional capabilities and career pathways.

Who are we looking for?

  • South Australian Public Sector employees who can support new trainees and graduate program participants by sharing their experiences as a former trainee or graduate.
  • Any South Australian Public Sector employees who are passionate and willing to contribute to the development of young people entering into the public sector.

Role of the mentor is to:

  • Develop an open and trusting relationship
  • Support the mentee to develop their understanding of working in the public sector
  • Exemplify the public sector values in practice
  • Provide guidance and support through difficult situations
  • Help develop professional capabilities and assist in career and personal goal setting.

What will I do as a mentor?

  • Mentors will support a group of up to three trainees or graduates at a time
  • A time commitment of approximately one hour per month is needed for mentors to meet with their mentees
  • Mentor meetings are held over a 10 month duration
  • Mentors facilitate professional conversations during their meetings to develop their mentees understanding of the South Australian Public Sector
  • Mentors provide support and assist their mentees to develop their own professional capabilities and professional goal setting
  • Mentors will be provided an induction session facilitated by the Office for the Public Sector, Employment Programs Team
  • Mentors will be invited to ‘Mentor Check-In Sessions’ hosted by the Office for the Public Sector, Employment Programs Team.

How to become a mentor:

Please complete the Mentor Expression of Interest form and email to flexibility@sa.gov.au along with your current CV.

You will be invited to attend a Mentor Introduction Session where you will learn more about the program.

Please note we request you share your Mentor Profile with your allocated mentee(s) prior to your first meeting.
